Main Premise: The Powerpuff Girls is an interesting T.V. show for children. In this cartoon, we can see how the gender roles have taken a complete 180 degrees turn. In the show, we can see that most villains are male but the three main characters who act as the heroes in the show are females. The protagonists contends and then finally overpowers the antagonists and saves the day.
Character Roles: While the trio always saves the day, they still display how typical girls act in their age. The girls sleep in a pink room that is filled with stuffed animals, hearts, and rainbow colored blankets. But one of the girls named Buttercup, contrasting to this girly side, tends to go against her feminine side and act more like a tomboy. Buttercup also acts more violently and aggresively than her sisters. Also the trio’s only father figure, Professor Utonium, also goes against the gender role by taking care of the three sisters and being responsible for the domestic duties.
Communications and Power: The only relationship that seems important to talk about in this children’s show is the relationship between Professor Utonium and the three sisters. Even though Professor Utonium is a male character, he is the one who cares and nurtures for the sisters. Also the sisters rely on him like he is their mother. Unlike the typical gender role of a men, the actions taken by Professor Utonium is more effeminate. He is responsible for all the domestic duties that most women have. For the most part, the relationship between the girls and Professor Utonium is full of respect and affection.
