According to Michael Kimmel’ guy code, we can see the 10 rules that guys have to follow in order to be accepted. One rule that is clearly followed is “don’t get mad, get even”. The rap group N.W.A constantly includes violence and aggression in their lyrics. In the song, “F*** the police”, the group shouts “F*** the police!”. One other rule that’s part of the guy code is “size matters”. In the song “Shabba” by A$AP Ferg and A$AP Rocky, both say “short n**** but my d**k long; skinny n**** but my d**k tall”. Stating that they are “bigger” than everyone else shows how if they don’t live up to the guy code, they will be emasculated and looked down upon. Another rule of the guy code is “whoever has the most toys and dies, wins”. The rap group Migos repeatedly discuss how lavish they live their lives with the multiple cars, women and other items that they have which makes them seem materialistic. Many rappers follow the guy code in order to show how they are “manly” and able to conform to society. Finally, in the guy code, the rule of being the "big wheel" is shown in the song "Mockingbird" by Eminem. While talking to his daughter he says that "Daddy's always on the move, mamma's always on the news
I try to keep you sheltered from it but somehow it seems The harder that I try to do that, the more it backfires on me". Even though Eminem is facing hard times, he is still trying to help out his daughter and wife. |
